The Love of The Father

I John 3:1 is truly one of the great verses in scripture. The apostle John very plainly declares, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God.” Consider for a moment that Almighty God has loved you in such a way that he has chosen to call you his child. For some, this could result in great pride; however, the appropriate response is one of humility, as we consider ourselves in the true light of His Word. We must accept that we do not deserve this love; however, God has chosen to love us anyway. Likewise, there is no way we could hope to earn His favor; however, this is also not the case. We must accept that God has made a choice to love us. His love is not a reciprocation of our love, for scripture says, “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” It is also not a result of a hormonal attraction as many of our earthly relationships are. It is truly a result of God’s choice to love us.

If we take this concept one step further, we find that God has commanded us to love others as He has loved us. This means we are to choose to love them. It does not just apply when we are attracted to others, we are to choose to love. It does not apply only when others are kind to us, we choose to love, regardless of their response to us. This might seem a daunting task for God to expect us to choose to love; however, when we truly accept the depth and breadth of God’s love for us, we are then released to love others.
